Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “küçük sindirilebilirler”) tanımlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine sargılanmasıyla oluşan gücük polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız sözıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok sayıda polipeptit madun birimi çitndırır). Yapı taşı fark peptitlerin gücük, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, başka amino asite mütemadi, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle sargılanır. Polipeptid gestaltsına beklan amino asitlerin her biri gestaltya peptid sargılarıyla sargılanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine beklan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, degaje amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin başka ucundaki degaje α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
